The question to ask is what does a 50kg load rating on shelving actually mean inside the test report, not on the retail box. Read the rating as a contract clause, not a material property. A number without a test method, a deflection limit, a duration and a temperature is marketing. Below is how the three common numbers are actually generated, and how to write a load test into a purchase order so the shelf you approve is the shelf you receive. COLOSI, the storage brand of Sanmen Dexin Machinery Co., Ltd., runs these tests on every storage program we tool, and the spread is always wider than the buyer expects.
It means one of four things: a per-shelf uniformly distributed load held for 24 hours under a stated deflection limit, a per-unit total, a short-term proof load, or a failure load divided by a safety factor. Those four are not interchangeable, and the gap between them is a factor of three.
Take one shelf from a 60 L storage program: 1,200 × 400 mm, clarified PP, 2.2 mm skin with four 14 mm ribs, supported at the two short ends. Same physical part, same rig, same 23 °C room:
| Acceptance criterion | Reported capacity | What the number means |
| Catastrophic failure load | 85 kg | The load at which the shelf folds. No safety factor applied. |
| Deflection ≤ L/200 after 24 h | 45 kg | Mid-span sags no more than 6 mm. A usable working load. |
| Permanent set ≤ 1 mm after unload | 28 kg | The shelf returns to flat. The number a spec sheet should carry. |
| 50 kg proof load, 1 hour, no collapse | "Pass" | Holds for an hour and is released. Says nothing about year three. |
The 85 kg figure is the one that reaches catalogs, because it is the easiest to produce and the most flattering. The 28 kg figure is the one that determines whether the shelf is still flat when a customer moves house. Between them sits the variable nobody quotes: time.
Polypropylene creeps. Under a sustained load at 23 °C, a PP shelf will continue to deflect for weeks, and the rate roughly doubles to triples at 40 °C — the temperature inside a parked van or an unventilated garage in August. A shelf that deflects 4 mm in the first hour can reach 11 mm in 30 days at 40 °C under the same load. The practical rule we use for long-term capacity is 35–45% of the short-term failure load for PP at 40 °C, which is why the 85 kg shelf earns a 28–35 kg working rating.
Point load is the second distortion. A uniformly distributed 50 kg produces a bending moment of wL²/8. The same 50 kg placed on a 100 mm pad at mid-span produces roughly twice that moment, so a shelf rated 50 kg UDL often fails at 25–30 kg concentrated. If your end user stores toolboxes, paint tins or a stack of books in the middle, rate for point load.
✅ Bottom line: Ask for the criterion, not the number — a 50 kg rating means 28 kg of real long-term capacity unless the supplier names the deflection limit, the 40 °C conditioning and the 24-hour hold.
Static tests hold a load and measure deflection; dynamic tests drop, impact and cycle it — and a shelf that passes one can fail the other, because the two load paths stress different features. A static load versus dynamic load test plastic shelving program produces two different failure modes: static loading bends the shelf and pulls on the end brackets. Dynamic loading, whether it is a 10 kg drop from 150 mm or a 500-cycle shaker run, attacks the weld line at the rib root, the snap-fit of the shelf into the upright, and the corner where the mould gates left a knit line.
No single plastic Storage rack load rating test standard covers the category. Three standards cover most of what buyers ask for. EN 14749 sets safety requirements and test methods for domestic storage furniture and worktops, including static load and horizontal force tests. ANSI/BIFMA X5.9 does the equivalent job for office storage units. ISO 7170 defines strength and durability tests for storage units generally. None of them invents a capacity number for you — each defines a procedure and a pass criterion, which is exactly what you want in a PO.
A load rating you can audit looks like this:
Whichever plastic storage rack load rating test standard your retailer names, that last line is the one that saves money. PP copolymer from two suppliers with the same datasheet can differ by 15% in flexural modulus once talc filler and regrind ratio diverge, so a test report tied to a resin lot is repeatable and one tied to a marketing name is not.
✅ Bottom line: Write the 40 °C conditioning, the L/200 limit and the 1 mm permanent set into the PO, and the "50 kg" claim becomes a number you can enforce instead of a number you hope for.
Q: Is a 50kg load rating per shelf or for the whole unit? A: Usually per shelf, but the wording is often missing. A four-tier unit rated 50 kg per shelf carries 200 kg total, and the uprights — not the shelves — become the limiting part. Ask for the per-unit figure as well.
Q: Can I trust the load rating printed on a retail box? A: Treat it as a short-term proof load until the packaging names a standard and a deflection limit. Retail ratings are typically failure load divided by two, with no 40 °C conditioning, so real long-term capacity is often half the printed number.
Q: Does wall thickness alone determine the load rating? A: No. Stiffness scales with the cube of thickness but ribs recover most of it at lower weight, and bracket design often fails first — which is why COLOSI tests the assembly rather than the panel. A 2.0 mm ribbed shelf can outperform a 3.0 mm flat one, which is why the rating must be tested, not calculated.
Send COLOSI your shelf drawing and target load, and we will return the deflection curve at 23 °C and 40 °C, the permanent set figure, and the resin grade the rating is tied to. If you are comparing two quotes that both say "50 kg", we will tell you which criterion each one is hiding behind.
Sanmen Dexin Machinery Co., Ltd. has tooled injection moulds and storage programs in Zhejiang since 2013, with in-house load rigs for static, creep and drop testing. Custom and OEM programs get the test report before the shipment, not after the claim. Contact our engineering team for a factory-direct quote and a test protocol matched to your retailer's standard.
