Anyone asking how thick should a plastic storage bin wall be gets an answer between 1.5 mm and 3.2 mm, which is not an answer at all. The useful question is not what thickness is strongest. It is what thickness satisfies three constraints at once: flow length in the mould, stiffness at the target load, and the carton weight your freight budget allows. COLOSI, the storage brand of Sanmen Dexin Machinery Co., Ltd., tools storage bins from 1.5 mm to 3.2 mm, and the argument that decides it is almost always the one below.
Thickness is set by the mould first and the load second — if the melt cannot fill the part, a stronger wall is irrelevant. In injection moulding, the controlling number is flow length divided by wall thickness (L/t). For thin-wall PP, L/t above 250 is where short shots, weld lines and 25% higher injection pressure start appearing. A 60 L bin gated at one end of a 600 mm base has a flow path near 500 mm; at 2.0 mm that is L/t = 250, right at the edge. Gate it in the centre of the base instead and the longest flow drops to about 260 mm, L/t = 130, and 2.0 mm becomes comfortable.
Stiffness is the second constraint, and the plastic storage bin wall thickness versus load capacity relationship is not linear. Bending stiffness rises with the cube of thickness, so 2.0 → 2.5 mm is nearly double the stiffness of the flat wall. Ribs buy the same stiffness far more cheaply:
| Panel construction | Relative section modulus | Weight of a 600 × 400 mm wall | Equivalent flat-wall thickness |
| Flat, 2.0 mm | 1.0 | 0.44 kg | 2.0 mm |
| 2.0 mm + ribs at 12 mm deep, 100 mm pitch | ≈ 2.9 | 0.62 kg | ≈ 3.3 mm |
| Flat, 3.3 mm | ≈ 3.0 | 0.72 kg | 3.3 mm |
| 2.5 mm + ribs at 12 mm deep | ≈ 4.2 | 0.73 kg | ≈ 3.9 mm |
Ribs deliver roughly the same stiffness as a flat wall 65% thicker, at about 85% of the weight — and that gap is the entire reason good bins are ribbed rather than thick. The limits on ribs are mould-making, not mechanics: a 12 mm deep rib needs a 1.2 mm steel blade in the core, a draft angle of at least 0.5° per side, and an ejector layout that does not flex the rib root at release.
Practical bands for the category, based on what passes retail drop and load tests:
✅ Bottom line: 2.0 mm plus 12 mm ribs is the right answer for most 60 L bins — going to 3.0 mm flat adds 50% weight for less stiffness than the ribbed 2.0 mm wall.
A nominal 60 L bin with one square meter of moulded surface weighs 0.905 kg per 1.0 mm of wall in PP, so the gram weight target is just thickness times area times density. To answer what gram weight should a 60 litre storage box have, start from density: PP copolymer is 0.905 g/cm³; 1 m² at 1 mm is 1,000 cm³, or 0.905 kg. From there the ladder is linear until ribs and bosses start adding their own volume:
| Nominal wall | Moulded area 1.0 m² | With 15% rib and boss allowance | Resin cost at $1,200/t |
| 1.8 mm | 1.63 kg | 1.87 kg | $2.24 |
| 2.0 mm | 1.81 kg | 2.08 kg | $2.50 |
| 2.3 mm | 2.08 kg | 2.39 kg | $2.87 |
| 2.5 mm | 2.26 kg | 2.60 kg | $3.12 |
| 3.0 mm | 2.72 kg | 3.13 kg | $3.75 |
Two things in that table are worth carrying into a negotiation. First, the rib allowance is not a rounding error: on a real 60 L bin the ribs, the rim roll, the handle bosses and the lid skirt add 12–18% to the modelled volume, so a 2.0 mm bin lands at 2.05–2.10 kg, not 1.81 kg. A supplier quoting 1.7 kg for a 2.0 mm 60 L bin is either thinning the base to 1.6 mm or skipping the rim.
Second, resin is only part of the cost. A 0.5 mm increase adds 8–12% to cooling time, about 3 seconds on a 30-second cycle, or $0.0375 per part at a $45/hour machine rate. Across a container, plastic storage bin wall thickness versus load capacity is a freight question too: 0.45 kg per unit across 1,600 units is 720 kg, which rarely changes the container count but pushes LCL and parcel shipments into the next weight band.
How to specify it so it is enforceable: name the thickness at a defined point — "2.0 mm nominal at side wall mid-height, 20 mm below rim, ±0.15 mm, measured by ultrasonic gauge at four points" — plus a minimum part weight and a minimum top-rim load. Thickness alone is not enough, because a moulder can hit 2.0 mm on the side and thin the base to 1.4 mm where nobody measures. That is the practical form of the answer: a number plus the points where it gets checked.
✅ Bottom line: Spec the gram weight and the measurement points together — 2.0 mm nominal on a 60 L bin means 2.05–2.15 kg finished, and any quote below 1.9 kg is thin somewhere.
Q: Is 2 mm too thin for a storage bin that holds tools? A: For tools, rate for point load rather than uniform load. A 2.0 mm ribbed wall handles 25 kg spread out but deflects noticeably under a 10 kg toolbox on a 100 mm footprint. For that use, 2.5 mm with ribs at 80 mm pitch is the safer specification.
Q: Why does my 3 mm bin still crack at the corner? A: Corners fail from stress concentration, not thickness. A sharp internal radius, a gate placed at the corner, or a weld line running through it will crack regardless of wall. Increase the internal radius to at least half the wall thickness and move the gate away from the corner.
Q: Can thickness be reduced to hit a price target? A: Yes, if you compensate with rib depth and count — which is how COLOSI holds a 25 kg rating while cutting 20% of the part weight. Dropping from 2.5 mm flat to 2.0 mm ribbed saves about 20% weight and keeps stiffness, but requires a new core insert, so it only pays back above roughly 30,000 units per year.
Send COLOSI your bin drawing or target dimensions and load, and we will return a thickness and rib recommendation with the predicted part weight, cycle time and resin cost per unit. If your current supplier's 2.0 mm claim needs checking, we will measure a production sample and show you where it thins out.
