Clarified PP vs PET vs PS: What "Clear" Actually Costs Per Unit (2026)

Clarified PP is the only one of the three that stays clear at storage-bin wall thickness, survives a drop, and still takes a living hinge — and it is also the one that turns milky when you scale up. That single sentence explains most of the sample-versus-bulk disappointments in clear storage programs. On a 2 mm sample plaque, clarified PP measures 9–11% haze and looks convincingly transparent. Build the same box at 3.4 mm to pass a load test, add 20% regrind, and haze climbs to 15–18%: still "clear" on a data sheet, visibly frosted against a dark shelf.

The clarified polypropylene versus PET for clear storage boxes comparison buyers actually need is not which plastic is clearest. It is which plastic is clear enough at the thickness your load rating forces you to use, at a unit cost you can sell. COLOSI, the storage brand of Sanmen Dexin Machinery Co., Ltd., molds clear PP, PET and PS storage for private-label programs, and the material choice is usually settled by that arithmetic rather than by optics.

1. What plastic is used for clear storage containers — and what does each option cost?

Ask what plastic is used for clear storage containers and four answers cover almost the entire market: clarified PP, PET, PS and acrylic, and they sit at very different points on the clarity-versus-toughness curve. Clarified PP uses a sorbitol-based nucleating agent to suppress the crystal size that normally scatters light in polypropylene. PET is amorphous in injection grades and genuinely water-clear. General-purpose polystyrene is the cheapest way to get glass-like optics. Acrylic is the clearest and the most expensive.

On a clarified polypropylene versus PET for clear storage boxes quotation, the baseline cost needs unpacking, because resin price is the smaller half of the story. Clarified PP resin runs roughly 150–250 per tonne above standard injection-grade PP, and the clarifier masterbatch adds about 2–4% to part cost. PET looks competitive on a per-kilo basis until you count processing: it needs 4 hours of drying at 160 °C, runs 25–30% slower cycles, and cannot be run in a family mould with PP components. PS is cheaper to mould but its brittleness shows up in the return rate, not the invoice.

Then there is the hinge, and this is where an OEM brief usually goes wrong. If the product folds, the material question is over: only PP has the fatigue life for a living hinge at 0.25–0.35 mm. A clarified PP hinge will survive 1 million flex cycles in a well-gated mould; PET and PS crack at the first or second fold. That single constraint decides a whole subcategory of collapsible boxes before optics get a vote.

✅ Bottom line: Clarified PP wins on toughness and hinge capability, PET wins on optics at thin walls, and PS only wins if the box never gets dropped — pick by wall thickness and use case, not by clarity alone.

2. Why do clear plastic storage boxes look cloudy when the sample was clear?

Haze scales with the distance light travels through the material, so a wall thickened for load capacity degrades the optics that sold the sample. Bulk scattering is cumulative: double the path length and you roughly double the scattered fraction. A clarified PP plaque at 2.0 mm reading 10% haze becomes 15–18% at 3.4 mm, which is the mechanical reason why do clear plastic storage boxes look cloudy the moment the load rating thickens the wall. Nothing went wrong in the mould. The specification asked for two incompatible things, and the thicker wall won.

Four other mechanisms push the same direction, and all four are controllable:

  • Regrind ratio. Adding 20% regrind to clarified PP raises haze by 3–6 points and introduces gels and black specks. Above 25% the part stops reading as clear at any wall thickness, which is why COLOSI caps regrind on clear programs at 15%.
  • Melt and mould temperature. A cold mould (below 30 °C) freezes orientation and surface skin that scatters light. Running the cavity at 45–55 °C costs 8–12% more cycle time and recovers several points of haze.
  • Moisture and splay. PP does not need drying, but masterbatch and regrind do. Splay shows as silver streaks, which read to a consumer as "used plastic".
  • Clarifier overload. More nucleator is not better: past the solubility limit it plates out as a waxy film that makes the surface look greasy and drops impact strength.

There is also a measurement trap. Haze and clarity are different numbers. A box can sit at 6% haze and still look milky because its clarity — the fine-detail transmission measured separately — is poor, or because the mould texture was cut with an EDM finish that scatters at grazing angles. When you approve a clear sample, approve it against a defined standard: ASTM D1003 haze on a plaque at production thickness, plus a visual limit sample under D65 lighting with a printed card behind it.

✅ Bottom line: Fix the wall thickness before you choose the resin — a clear box specced at 3.4 mm needs a clarifier package and a 50 °C mould, or it will ship frosted.

FAQ

Q: Can a clear PP storage box be recycled with PET bottles? A: No. PP is resin code 5 and PET is code 1; mixing them contaminates both streams. Label the box and the lid with the correct code, and keep PP and PET components out of the same assembly where possible.

Q: Is clarified PP food safe for Kitchen Storage? A: The base resin is, and clarifiers used in food-contact grades are cleared under FDA 21 CFR 178.2010 and EU 10/2011. Confirm the specific masterbatch has a food-contact declaration, since some clarifier carriers are not cleared for fatty foods.

Q: Why does my PET box crack at the rim after a few months? A: Injection-grade PET is notch-sensitive and loses toughness as it ages and absorbs moisture. A sharp rim radius plus a 4 mm gate scar is enough to start a crack. Increasing the rim radius to 1.5 mm and annealing the part removes most of it.

Settle clarity and cost in one sample round

Send COLOSI your target wall thickness and a photo of what "clear" means to your buyer. We will quote the clarified polypropylene versus PET for clear storage boxes trade-off at your thickness, with a defined haze limit, plus PET and PS alternatives at the same geometry, so the comparison is per finished part rather than per kilo of resin.

Sanmen Dexin Machinery Co., Ltd. has run clear and opaque storage moulds from Zhejiang since 2013, with in-house haze measurement and colour matching against customer limit samples. OEM and custom programs include a first-article report with haze, wall thickness and drop results. Contact our engineering team for a factory-direct quote.
