A first mixed container should carry 10 to 14 SKUs, not 40. The 12-SKU plan below fills 64.1 of a 40HQ's 76 cbm with 732 cartons and 17,568 units at 6.9 tonnes — about $0.43 per unit in ocean freight at $7,500 a container.
Most first orders die in the same place: a 40-SKU wish list gets quoted happily, then half the SKUs turn out to sit below MOQ and the cube will not close without cutting the good items. The fix is not negotiation, it is arithmetic done in the right order.
This is the sequence COLOSI walks new importers through — the housewares line of Sanmen Dexin Machinery Co., Ltd. — and the numbers below come from the same worksheet: how to build a mixed container of household plastic products that survives its first sell-through.

Twelve — because that is where three curves cross: per-SKU MOQ, factory price breaks, and how much of the order you can afford to lose on one bad guess.
Ask how many SKUs should a first container of housewares have and most suppliers answer from habit. Run the same 64 cbm budget at three different counts:
The working split is six core and six test: the core six take 76% of the cube and 88% of the units, the test six share 24% and 12%. That asymmetry is deliberate — depth pays for the container, breadth buys the information.
| SKU | Product | Tier | Ctn | cbm | Units | Ctn kg | Freight/unit |

| D-BIN-S | 8 L storage bin | Core | 110 | 9.68 | 2,640 | 9.0 | $0.43 |
| D-BIN-L | 45 L lidded bin | Core | 62 | 7.25 | 372 | 10.3 | $2.28 |
| M-BOX | Family first aid box | Core | 85 | 7.14 | 1,700 | 10.1 | $0.49 |
| P-BOWL | Slow feeder bowl | Core | 80 | 5.68 | 4,800 | 9.0 | $0.14 |

| K-DRAIN | Dish drainer | Test | 24 | 2.81 | 288 | 9.6 | $1.14 |
| D-FOLD | 30 L foldable crate | Test | 38 | 2.74 | 760 | 17.6 | $0.42 |
| D-RACK | 3-tier shoe rack | Test | 42 | 2.27 | 336 | 11.1 | $0.79 |
| F-STOOL | Folding step stool | Test | 52 | 3.02 | 624 | 12.0 | $0.57 |
| P-LITTER | 55 cm covered litter box | Test | 30 | 3.63 | 120 | 8.3 | $3.54 |
| Total | 12 SKUs |
| 732 | 64.07 | 17,568 |
| $0.43 |
Four steps, in this order:
That is the whole method for how to build a mixed container of household plastic products: cube, carton, units, then MOQ.
Where the money actually leaks. Freight follows volume, not value, so it never divides evenly across a mixed load: the bowl at $0.14 per unit, the 45 L bin at $2.28, the litter box at $3.54. A single-SKU container of bowls would cut average freight from $0.43 to $0.14 and leave you holding 54,000 bowls. Paying $0.29 extra per unit for a sellable assortment is the cheapest insurance in the order. Carrying bulky, low-value SKUs that freight at three times their FOB is what is not cheap — and no wholesale supplier will volunteer that column before you sign.
✅ Bottom line: Twelve SKUs — six core, six test — is the widest assortment that still clears per-SKU price breaks inside one 40HQ.
Not against the payload limit. At 6.9 tonnes this load uses 26% of a 40HQ's 26,500 kg rating — you cube out long before you weigh out. The weight you have to balance is the weight on the bottom carton.
Household plastics run about 108 kg per cbm. Anyone working out how to balance weight in a mixed household goods container expects a tonnage formula; this number reframes it. Overweight is a 20GP issue, where dense SKUs like thick-wall totes and footstools can hit a destination road limit before the cube closes. In a 40HQ the failure mode is compression, not tonnage.
Do the stack math. A 10 kg carton six high — 2.4 m of a 2.69 m container — puts 50 kg on the bottom box. An ECT-32 carton tests around 280 kg of compression strength dry, but four weeks at 40°C and 90% relative humidity on a Red Sea routing cuts that 35–45%, to roughly 160–180 kg. With a 3:1 safety factor you need 150 kg. The margin is thin, and it disappears entirely for the 17.6 kg foldable-crate carton.
Stack height has its own cliff: 44.8 cm is the tallest carton that still fits six tiers in a 2.69 m container. The 45 cm drainer and bin cartons in this plan therefore lose a full tier, 17% of their bay, and the 52 cm litter box packs five high instead of six. Capping housewares cartons at 42 cm is worth more than it looks.
So how to balance weight in a mixed household goods container comes down to a bay plan, not a scale:
| Bay | Position | SKUs | cbm | Weight | kg/cbm |
| 1 | Nose, 0–3 m | P-BOWL, P-LITTER, K-CER | 11.47 | 1,058 kg | 92 |
| 2 | 3–6 m | K-FRIDGE, M-BOX | 16.24 | 1,608 kg | 99 |
| 3 | 6–9 m, over axles | D-BIN-S, D-FOLD, F-STOOL, D-RACK | 17.71 | 2,600 kg | 147 |
| 4 | Door, 9–12 m | K-SET3, K-DRAIN, D-BIN-L | 18.65 | 1,668 kg | 89 |
Rules that hold regardless of the plan:
✅ Bottom line: Load by carton weight, not gross tonnage: heaviest boxes on the floor, nothing over four high once a carton passes 15 kg.

Q: What is the minimum order for a mixed container? A: On stock tooling, 300–500 pieces per SKU and 12–18 SKUs to close a 40HQ. Custom colours or printed cartons typically push per-SKU MOQ to 1,000–3,000 pieces, which is why first orders stay on stock colours. Under 10 SKUs, a 20GP at 33 cbm is the cheaper start — the reason importers who ask how to build a mixed container of household plastic products settle on 12 lines rather than 6.
Q: Can I mix kitchen, storage, medicine and pet SKUs in one container? A: Yes, and you probably should. Cross-family mixing is what makes the test items viable: a 120-piece litter box order only clears its carton minimum because it shares the container with 4,800 bowls. Keep each family to two or three SKUs so the range still reads as a category, not a clearance lot.
Q: Do I need custom cartons for a first mixed order? A: Not for the first container. Stock cartons keep MOQ at 300–500 pieces and avoid a $1,200–2,500 printing plate charge. Once a SKU proves out, move it to a printed master carton and re-run the cube math — 2 cm off the carton height across 700 cartons buys back about 3.4 cbm of loading room. COLOSI runs both paths from the same tool, so it is a packaging change, not a new mould.
Send your target SKUs, pack sizes and destination port. COLOSI will return a filled bay plan, a per-SKU freight allocation and the landed cost per unit — free, no obligation.
Because Sanmen Dexin Machinery Co., Ltd. runs its own mould shop and eight injection lines, carton dimensions are set at the tooling stage rather than inherited from a trading company's catalogue. That is where cube is won or lost, and it is why a factory-direct quote from a China manufacturer should arrive with a carton spec attached. Ask for a custom OEM or ODM quote against your own carton dimensions, or start from the stock range and customise from there.
