A 40HQ holds 17,856 eight-litre bins, 6,000 twenty-litre bins, or 2,850 forty-five-litre boxes. Same 76 cbm container, three very different numbers — and the gap between them is not the box. It is the carton.
The 20 L figure is also 44% lower than it needs to be, for reasons that have nothing to do with how big the bin is and everything to do with how its carton divides into the container floor.
Most buyers get this number by dividing container volume by carton volume. That method is wrong by 14–29%, and it is wrong in the direction that makes you over-order and under-ship. What follows is the layer method, the six sizes it produces, and what a re-specified carton is worth in freight.

The honest answer is a carton dimension, not a litre rating. A 40HQ measures 1203 × 235 × 269 cm internally — 76.06 cbm, 28.3 m² of floor. You never fill 76 cbm; you fill whole cartons in whole columns, and whatever does not divide evenly ships as air.
That is why how many plastic storage boxes fit in a 40 foot container has no single answer per size — the same nominal 20 L bin can move 6,000 units or 8,640 depending on three numbers printed on the carton.
Four steps. No software needed.
Worked example — an 8 L bin, 24 per carton, carton 58 × 38 × 40 cm:
Volume division would have said 76.06 ÷ 0.0882 = 862 cartons. The real answer is 744 — the difference is 118 cartons of unusable space, 14% of your order, invisible in a spreadsheet.
Run how to calculate cartons per container for plastic storage bins this way across a full size range and the errors stop being uniform. The 8 L and 80 L cartons reach 86% of internal volume; the 20 L and 45 L stall at 71–73%. The gap is a centimetre on each of two dimensions — and it stays silent, because the quote, the packing list and the invoice all look correct.
One more variable worth knowing: a standard 40GP is 30 cm shorter inside than a 40HQ, 239 cm against 269 cm. On a 40 cm carton that is five tiers instead of six. Same footprint, same rate basis in most trades, 17% less cargo.
| Box | Carton (cm) | Pack | cbm/ctn | Ctn/layer | Tiers | Units per 40HQ | $/unit |
| 8 L | 58 × 38 × 40 | 24 | 0.0882 | 124 | 6 | 17,856 | $0.42 |
| 20 L | 60 × 40 × 45 | 12 | 0.1080 | 100 | 5 | 6,000 | $1.25 |
| 45 L | 62 × 42 × 45 | 6 | 0.1172 | 95 | 5 | 2,850 | $2.63 |
| 80 L | 65 × 45 × 50 | 4 | 0.1462 | 90 | 5 | 1,800 | $4.17 |
| 120 L | 70 × 50 × 55 | 3 | 0.1925 | 72 | 4 | 864 | $8.68 |
| 160 L | 78 × 55 × 58 | 2 | 0.2488 | 63 | 4 | 504 | $14.88 |
Now look at the two worst rows. The 20 L and the 45 L are the most-ordered sizes in the range and the two worst-stowed, at 71% and 73% of internal volume. Both are 45 cm tall and 40–42 cm wide, and both numbers sit just past a threshold:
Change both and the 20 L carton becomes 60 × 39 × 44: 20 rows × 6 columns × 6 tiers = 720 cartons, 8,640 units instead of 6,000 — +44% from 2 cm of carton. Same product, same mould, same resin. A different packing pattern.
That is not something a trading company can offer halfway through a quote. It needs a manufacturer who owns the tool and will re-run the packing trial, which is why COLOSI settles carton dimensions before the first sample rather than after the first complaint.
✅ Bottom line: Container capacity is a carton design decision; 2 cm on the right dimension is worth more than a 5% resin discount.
On a China–US West Coast routing in 2026, budget $3,500 to $8,000 all-in, and expect the per-unit figure to land anywhere from $0.42 to $14.88 — because freight follows carton cube, not product value.
| Cost line (40HQ, China → USWC) | Low | High |
| Ocean freight, port-to-port | $2,500 | $5,500 |
| Origin THC, docs, VGM, ISPS | $180 | $400 |
| Destination THC, chassis, ISPS | $300 | $700 |
| Customs entry, ISF, MPF/HMF | $150 | $350 |
| Inland drayage to warehouse | $350 | $900 |
| Cargo insurance | $60 | $200 |
| Total | $3,540 | $8,050 |
For reference, the Drewry World Container Index put Shanghai–Los Angeles at $7,838 on 24 September 2026. That is a published spot benchmark, not a quote — a contract rate booked in a soft window can sit 40% below it.
So how much does it cost to ship a 40HQ of storage boxes is really a question about which size fills it. At a $7,500 working rate: an 8 L bin carries $0.42 of freight, a 45 L box $2.63, a 160 L box $14.88. On a 45 L box retailing at $19.99, freight is 13% of the shelf price; on a 160 L box it can exceed the FOB.
COLOSI builds this table for every quotation, because buyers reliably underestimate lines three through six — the ones that are not ocean freight.
Three levers move that number, in order of size:
✅ Bottom line: Negotiate the carton before you negotiate the rate — container utilisation moves freight per unit more than any forwarder can.
Q: How many 45 L boxes fit in a 20GP instead of a 40HQ? A: About 1,350 units — 225 cartons of six. The 20GP measures 589 × 235 × 239 cm, so the same 62 × 42 × 45 carton gives 9 × 5 columns and 5 tiers. Roughly 47% of a 40HQ load for about 55–65% of the freight, which is the trade-off worth checking before you book.
Q: Can I get carton dimensions optimised for container loading? A: Yes, and it should be part of the first quote rather than a later request. COLOSI sets carton specs at the tooling stage, so a factory can size the master carton to the 235 cm container width instead of inheriting one from a stock ODM template. Ask any China supplier for the carton dimensions in writing before you compare unit prices — two quotes at the same FOB are not the same landed cost.
Q: Does a taller stack always mean more units per container? A: Only until the carton stops fitting six tiers. Below 44.8 cm you get six tiers in a 2.69 m container, above it five — and no amount of careful loading recovers the missing 17%. Weight rarely binds on housewares, so height and footprint are the only two levers that matter.

Send COLOSI one carton dimension — or your full size ladder — and we will return the layer count, tier count, units per 40HQ and the freight per unit at your destination port. Free, and usually inside 48 hours.
Because Sanmen Dexin Machinery Co., Ltd. runs its own mould shop and eight injection lines, the carton and the box are designed together rather than one after the other. That is the difference between 6,000 and 8,640 units in the same container — and it is worth a custom or OEM quote before your next booking.
