A 45-day mold is not 45 days of work. It is 43 days of critical path — about 35 of them inside the molder's own shop, 8 belonging to your approval window, the steel merchant, the furnace and the press schedule — plus two days of float. That distinction decides whether a 30-day promise is a schedule or a sales line, and it tells you exactly which days are worth buying when the project slips.
Into ten stages that run partly in series and partly in parallel, which is why the stage durations never add up to the number on the quote. The published breakdowns mostly collapse weeks three and four into one line — one widely circulated 45-day plan gives six days for CNC and EDM combined, which is one cavity insert, not a mold. Separating the stages is the only way to see the mold manufacturing schedule steel heat treatment edm and polishing actually follow. The question how long does it take to make a mold in china gets answered everywhere in ranges — 20–25 days simple, 30–40 medium, 45–60 complex — and almost nowhere in stages.
| Stage | Days | Whose clock | Work or wait |
| 1. DFM and part review | 2–4 | molder | work |
| 2. Mold design | 4–8 | molder | work |
| 3. Your design approval | 2–5 | you | wait |
| 4. Steel and mold base | 2–3 standard base; 7–10 non-standard; 10–15 imported or ESR grade | steel merchant | wait |
| 5. Rough machining, CNC | 7–10 | molder | work |
| 6. Stress relief and vacuum heat treatment | 1–3 local; 3–5 with transport; 7–10 large or special cycle | outside furnace | wait |
| 7. Finishing: high-speed mill, wire EDM, sinker, grinding | 10–14 | molder | work |
| 8. Polishing and texture | 3–7 | molder or outsourced | work |
| 9. Fitting and assembly | 3–5 | molder | work |
| 10. T1 trial | 2–5 | press schedule | wait |
| 11. Correction and T2 | 5–10 | molder | work |
The series does not simply sum, because three things start early. Stage 4 is ordered on day 3, not after design closes, and a standard base lands in two or three days. Polishing starts on the first finished component rather than waiting for the last. Wire-cut, sinker and high-speed milling run on different components at once.
Follow the longest chain and the path reads: DFM 3 · design 4 · your approval 2 · steel lag 1 · rough 8 · furnace 4 · finish 12 · polish 4 · fit 4 · T1 3. That is 43 days to first samples. Add the correction round and it is 50 days to samples you can approve.
So where does "45 days" come from? It is that 43 rounded up with two days of float. Which makes the useful question not "how long does a mold take" but 45 days to what — T1, T2, or an approved sample you can put into production. COLOSI quotes both numbers separately for this reason; Sanmen Dexin Machinery Co., Ltd. has run its own toolroom since 2013, and a 43-day path to T1 with a 7-day correction round is the honest shape of it.
✅ Bottom line: 43 days to first samples and 50 to approvable ones; any quote that names a single number without saying which milestone is quoting a feeling.
About 8 of the 43 days belong to someone else — your inbox, the steel merchant, the furnace, the press schedule — and no amount of money moves them. The other 35 are in the shop, and roughly two-thirds of those can be bought. Here is the menu, and this is what injection mold build lead time week by week looks like once each day has a price on it.
| Move | Days bought | What it costs |
| Answer the design approval in 24 h instead of 4 days | 2–3 | nothing, it is your inbox |
| Standard LKM base instead of a non-standard one | 4–7 | −¥1,500; it is also cheaper |
| A grade the shop stocks (P20, 718H) instead of SKD61 or 1.2344 ESR | 7–10 | ±0 on the tooling bill, −30–50% shot life |
| Rough machining on two machines instead of one | 3–4 | +4–6% of tooling |
| Unmanned night shift on the finishing machines | 3–4 | +4–8% of tooling |
| A second EDM in parallel with the wire-cut | 3–5 | +$300–600 |
| Local heat treater, 24 h turnaround, no cross-province freight | 2–4 | +¥1–2/kg |
| Approve a cosmetic defect at T1 and fix it at T2 | 5–7 | the defect ships |
The days do not add. This is the part that catches experienced buyers. A mold manufacturing schedule steel heat treatment edm and polish block only becomes useful once every entry carries a date and an owner, because design approval, steel lead time and rough machining sit on the same branch: compress all three by five days each and the path shortens by five, not fifteen. Compressing stage 4 while stage 7 is fourteen days long buys you nothing at all — the steel simply arrives earlier and sits on the floor. A schedule is shortened by its longest chain, and every day saved off a parallel branch turns into inventory.
COLOSI owns two of the four queues — machining and the local furnace — which is why we publish the gate chart instead of a duration. That is also why the floor is real. Take the 8 days nobody controls, add roughly 11 days of labour-bound work that cannot be halved — DFM, design, fitting, T1 — and you land near 30 days for a steel production mold. Twenty-five is achievable with unmanned nights and by skipping the correction round; the shops that advertise it usually admit in the next sentence that below that you are trading quality for calendar days.
Which makes how long does it take to make a mold in china answerable in one exchange: ask for the date of each gate, not the duration of each stage, and ask who owns it. A Gantt in durations hides the float. A Gantt in dates cannot.
✅ Bottom line: Only the longest chain shortens a schedule; compressing a parallel branch buys inventory, not days, and roughly 8 days will never be yours to buy.
Q: A supplier quoted 45 days. Should I budget for 60? A: Ask 45 days to what. To T1 samples, then plus 7 days for correction and you approve at day 52. To approved samples, and 45 is aggressive but possible. The gap between the two answers is a week, and it is usually the week that ruins a launch date. Mapping injection mold build lead time week by week against the milestone you actually need is what exposes it before signature.
Q: What actually makes a mold late? A: Not machining speed. It is design changes after steel is cut and a rejected T1 — both scope, not throughput. Those two account for most of the difference between a 43-day path and the 70-day stories, which is why injection mold build lead time week by week breaks down in the finishing stage whenever a tool is late.
Q: Can I get the schedule before paying? A: Ask for it with the quote and treat its absence as information. A custom tooling supplier will send dated gates for steel arrival, roughing complete, heat treatment out and back, T1 and correction. COLOSI sends that chart with the quote, not after the PO. A trader cannot send one at all, because he does not own the queue.
Send your part and volume to COLOSI and we return a dated gate chart — steel arrival, roughing complete, furnace out and back, T1, correction — with the name of whoever owns each gate, plus the separate dates for T1 and for approved samples. Sanmen Dexin Machinery Co., Ltd. machines in-house and uses a local vacuum treater, so two of the four queues on the path are ours to schedule. Ask for the gate chart alongside a wholesale tooling quote on your next OEM program.
